As a multicultural marketing agency, we’ve been creating social media content for our clients for nearly a decade and something we have realized is the power of sharing one of our social media influencer’s content on social media. Twitter is the perfect example of sharing content from others; in fact, the most retweeted tweet has over 3.51 million retweets and for its creator, @carterjwm, it won him a free year of chicken nuggets from Wendy’s! Although Twitter is all about sharing content and they make it extremely easy to do with the push of the retweet button, Instagram is much different. Instagram’s terms of use are very specific about a user’s posts not infringing on the rights of others. That’s why we at Nativa have decided to guide you via a step by step instructional on the best way to responsibly create a regram.

1. Ask Before you Regram

The very first thing you need to do is obtain the influencer’s permission to use their content. DON’T post anything you’ve copied or collected from the internet or another user if you don’t have the written permission to post it. Instagram has a few sections regarding copywriting and infractions can result in the termination of your account. That’s why the expression “It’s better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission” does NOT apply here.

2. Plan Your Regram Strategy

According to Nielsen’s latest Global Trust in Advertising report, which surveyed more than 28,000 Internet respondents in 56 countries, 92% of consumers say they trust recommendations from other people over traditional advertising. So it is very important to plan the way you will use influencers’ content to your benefit. Here are several recommendations for putting together your regram:

  • Always create a unique hashtag – the hashtag can be something related to your product, tagline, campaign or even a play off the name of the product that you are promoting. Creating a unique hashtag is the easiest way to track all the shares and impressions you are receiving from your regram efforts.
  • Make it visible – add your hashtag everywhere; your bio, Instagram stories, posts, and live events where you can ask influencers to post content using the specific hashtag.
  • Encourage the audience to use your hashtag – add a section on your bio, or even create a second handle just for your regrams. A good example is the Korean beauty company @Hanacure which has even celebrities such as Drew Barrymore using their hashtag while trying out their products. Another strategy has worked well even with celebrities which is to run a contest on Instagram using your hashtag. Rapper-singer @Nickiminaj promoted her song through a contest in which the winner would receive $10,000 and the opportunity to meet Ms. Minaj. All the contestants had to do is post their video using the hashtag #megatronchallenge. The contest was able to gain more than 60,000 submissions.

3. How to Regram with the Right Tools

For an Instagram Post, use the Repost App

There are plenty of tools on the internet you can use to regram a post, but we would like to highlight our favorites, most helpful and free tools.

  • Repost App available for IOS and Android (Use for Posting Images to Your Feed Only)

  1. The first step is to go to the post you want to regram and click on the three dots on the front right corner. Then click on ‘Copy Link’
  2. Open the Repost App and immediately it will show you the photo you selected to regram
  3. Click on ‘Attribution’ to change the position of the watermark with the person’s username or select ‘None’ if you don’t want to show this on the photo.
  4. Select ‘Copy Caption’ if you are using the same caption as the original.
  5. If you choose a different social media channel instead of Instagram to publish your content, you can save the image by clicking on the top-right icon and then on ‘Save Image’. The app will request permission to access your camera roll.
  6. Or just go ahead and use the Repost app to create the regram, and if you select the caption option, click paste on the empty text section and you will see the original text there.
  • Downloadgram.com is a simple website where you paste the link of the post you want to regram and it allows you to download the image. (Use for Post Pictures Only)how to regram
  • Or just do it manually; if you want to avoid the hassle of choosing an app or website, follow these simple steps:

  1. Take a screenshot of the picture, clear of any undesired icons such as the battery indicator or the time and temperature by using the crop option.
  2. Upload the image to Instagram and resize if necessary
  3. Add the caption, tag the brands and use select your hashtags
  4. Post!

4. Same Caption or Original Text?

Be original. Don’t just copy the same text as from the original post. If you don’t have anything in mind, you can use a quote from the original post for inspiration or add to your caption. Be sure to use the same hashtags to highlight any brands, restaurants or collaboration made on the post. There are also hashtags from the brands’ campaign you won’t want to miss.

5. It’s all about Instagram Stories

There are two ways to repost Instagram stories.

  1. Repost a user’s Instagram Story to yours – if you encounter an influencer using your hashtag and you want to share with your audience, just click on the airplane button below the post and tap the option ‘Add to your Story’ and it will be ready to customize on the editor. Once you add all the stickers and gifs click on ‘‘Your Story’‘ or profile icon to share with your audience.
  2.  Repost an Instagram Story using the where you were tag, when you are tagged in an Instagram story you receive a notification in your DM (Direct Messages) inbox. Within that box, you’ll see the option to ‘Add this to your Story’. From there, just follow the steps from above and you’re all set.

    Final Tip

And finally, we have an extra tip for you that can help you go beyond and become a master on reposting stories. just follow the next tips.
So we don’t recommend that you repost every Instagram story you liked or you were tagged in. Be creative and select a theme. Here is an example from Airbnb; they create several highlights with different themes using swipe ups, surveys, and reposts, engaging the audience and creating storytelling posts.
