More Than an Internship: My Summer at Nativa

My name is Lauren Grisoni, and I am entering my senior year at Ohio University, studying Marketing, and this summer I interned at Nativa Multicultural Marketing Agency. When I first started my summer internship at Nativa, I expected to learn more about marketing. What I didn’t expect was how quickly I’d be trusted with real client work, welcomed into such a supportive team, and given a behind-the-scenes look at how an agency brings ideas to life.

As a marketing student, you spend a lot of time learning theories, strategies, and case studies in the classroom. But working at Nativa showed me what marketing actually looks like in the real world. Every project had a purpose, every meeting had a strategy, and every campaign was backed by thoughtful research, collaboration, and creativity.

Classroom Lessons Into Client Work

One of my favorite parts of the internship was working on actual client projects. Rather than completing practice assignments, I had the opportunity to contribute to work that would be seen by real audiences and support the real brands that we work with including Desert Financial Credit Union, El Jimador, Vitalant, and Schwarzkopf. Whether I was creating social media content, writing blog articles, or helping with campaign materials, I felt like my work had meaning. It was incredibly rewarding to know that I wasn’t just observing in my role, but that I was contributing.

I also had the chance to sit in on client meetings and internal strategy sessions, which gave me confidence and experience to understand how marketing campaigns come to life. It was fascinating to watch ideas evolve from an initial conversation into a fully developed campaign. I learned that great marketing isn’t just about making something look good, it’s about understanding people, researching audiences, solving problems, and making intentional decisions every step of the way.

Seeing Strategy Come to Life

One thing that stood out to me throughout the summer was how collaborative the agency environment is. Every campaign involved multiple perspectives, brainstorming sessions, and thoughtful discussion before anything was finalized. Seeing that process firsthand taught me that some of the best ideas come from working together and being open to different viewpoints.

Beyond client work, I had the opportunity to write blog articles covering industry trends, campaigns, and marketing insights. I was also able to take over the social media platforms for Nativa and share creativity with engaging posts. One of my favorite types of content to create was office humor videos with my fellow interns. We would enjoy brainstorming and sharing a laugh as we created the videos. Writing for Nativa challenged me to think strategically while improving my ability to communicate ideas in a way that was engaging, informative, and relevant. It also gave me a greater appreciation for content marketing and the role storytelling plays in building strong brands.

Growth Beyond the Internship

Another highlight of my internship was attending a networking event alongside my mentor, Gaby Erikson. Networking had always felt a little intimidating to me, but watching Gaby build authentic relationships and introduce me to other professionals helped me become much more confident. It reminded me that networking isn’t about collecting business cards, it’s about building genuine connections and learning from the people around you. This opportunity was highly beneficial to me, as I am not originally from Arizona, so connecting with the business community will help me build a future career in the Phoenix area.

What made this internship truly special, though, wasn’t just the work, it was the people. From my first day, everyone at Nativa made me feel like part of the team. Whether someone was answering my questions, giving feedback on a project, or simply taking time to get to know me, I always felt supported. Those relationships made coming into the office something I genuinely looked forward to each week.

My Biggest Takeaway

Looking back, my biggest takeaway wasn’t learning how to use a specific marketing tool or write stronger copy, although I definitely improved those skills. It was learning how strategy drives every creative decision. Great marketing doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from asking the right questions, researching the audience, collaborating with others, and constantly refining ideas until they accomplish a clear goal.

I’m incredibly grateful to the entire Nativa team for trusting me with real work, investing in my growth, and making this summer such an unforgettable experience. If you’re considering interning at Nativa, I will leave you with some advice. Say yes to every opportunity, ask questions, get involved, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. You never know where those experiences will lead!
